In the Beginning

I am going to take a look at the opening 5 verses of the Gospel according to John:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” [ESV]

So firstly “In the beginning”, we are not just talking about any beginning but this is in the beginning before creation had been created before any stories had been created saying In the beginning. The Word was in the beginning, we know that the Word is Christ but more importantly Christ is The Word, there is no other word that is truth, only the words of Christ are truth and if we have The Word then we have need of no other word in our life. We know now that Christ was not of creation but before it.

“the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” These words distinctly point towards the Trinity, at first glance they might be seen as odd in the sense the Word was with himself but where the Word is you could put the Holy Spirit or the Father and it becomes slightly easier for the mind to grapple with the concept of the Trinity. The trinity is what is at work in verse 3 in the creation of everything, the godhead creates everything through the Word much in the way a sculptor moulds clay through his hands. From this we know Christ to be God as part or the Trinity and that he was the creator.

The life it is referring to in verse 4 is the eternal life that is gifted by Gods grace to every follower of Christ, this was the gift given to us when he died on the cross. This life is the light of men because it is the only way that we can be saved from Gods wrath for our Sin. Verse 5 points towards Christs omnipotence saying he can not be defeated or overcome in any way, and how reassuring to know that there is no way this gift of eternal life can be taken from us.

To sum up we have established that Christ:

  • existed before creation
  • is part of the Trinity and is fully God
  • is the Creator
  • is the giver of eternal life
  • not defeatable
